Ada County still has miles and miles of two-lane country roads that have no more capacity than they had 100 years ago! When these roads were built, they were adequate because the county was mostly rural. But that is no longer the case! With the dramatic increase in population and development in recent decades, many of these county roadways are inadequate. For the foreseeable future, the expansion and improvement of these roads must be our highest priority. As ACHD Commissioner, I will continue to push to make that happen.
Major highways are called "arterials" because they carry the lifeblood of the community - its people. Just as in the body, if that flow is restricted, the body cannot thrive. In the course of expanding our roads, it is important how we expand them. As an ACHD Commissioner, I continually work to ensure that our capital improvement projects are built right, such as using roundabouts and other innovative traffic features to keep traffic moving.
As an ACHD Commissioner our decisions on what projects to pursue should be made on objective grounds as much as possible. This means focusing on measurable characteristics, such as total traffic volume and level of service, in deciding where to direct our resources. It also means focusing on the facilities that are essential to the greatest number of our citizens.
ACHD spends millions of dollars of your money every year to build and maintain roads. I view spending this money as a sacred trust, and will think carefully before committing your tax dollars.
